What Your Professional Dog Photographer Wants You to Know
Capturing the perfect photo of your beloved dog isn’t just about snapping a picture; it’s about creating a memory that will last a lifetime. As a professional LA dog photographer, I’ve seen it all from the goofy grins, the shy pups, the high-energy tail waggers, and everything in between.
Here’s what I want you to know to make the most of your session with me!
9 Things This Dog Photographer Wants You to Know
1. Every Dog is a Good Dog
No matter your dog’s energy level, quirks, or personality, we’re here to celebrate them. Don’t worry if your dog is overly excited, nervous, or distracted—it's completely normal! I have all the tricks (and treats!) up my sleeve to capture beautiful photos. You can leave it to me.
2. A Little Prep Goes a Long Way
A little prep work can help your session go smoothly:
Training Beforehand: Teaching your dog to sit and laydown goes a long way, even if they aren’t able to stay - I’m quick enough to capture just one second of a sit or laydown to add some variety to your poses. Training is not at all necessary though, it’s just for that extra credit.
Bring Their Favorite Treats and Toys: These can help grab their attention during the session and bring that sparkle into their eyes when they see you brought their favorite things along.
Grooming Matters: A clean coat and brushed fur ensure your pup looks their best in every shot, but make sure not to do their bath the day of the session - that’s just too much for one day for most dogs to handle. I suggest bath time a day or two before your session and brushing the day of the session.
3. Relax, I’ve Got This
Your dog feeds off your energy, so they’ll be more likely to settle in and enjoy the experience if you're calm and relaxed. Even if things feel chaotic or your pup isn’t "posing" as you hoped, trust me, I’m capturing all the magical moments in between.
4. Location, Location, Location
Choosing the right location can enhance your photos and match your home decor (yes, this matters!). Whether it’s a local park, the beach, or an urban spot, the setting will reflect your dog’s personality and the memories you want to cherish.
5. The Magic of Patience
These are dog-led photo sessions. We’ll work at your dog’s pace to make them feel comfortable and capture their best side. If that means waiting a little longer for the perfect moment, I’m more than happy to do so.
6. You’re Part of the Team
You’re not just a bystander; you’re part of the session! Your dog feels safest with you, so don’t be shy to jump in and help hold their attention or get that perfect playful reaction. And yes, you’ll get in some of the photos, too!
7. Dogs Don’t Have to Be Perfect
You might worry that your dog doesn’t know how to sit, stay, or be off leash for pictures. Guess what? That’s completely okay! Some of the best shots happen when your dog is being their authentic, goofy self, and I can remove leashes in the editing process. No training is required!
8. It’s About the Connection
Our goal is to capture the bond between you and your dog. The little looks, the happy tail wags, the quiet moments, these are what make the photos special. Not every photo will be “posed,” so expect some fun candid moments, too.
9. Investing in Quality Artwork is Worth It
Digital images are great, but nothing beats seeing your dog’s portrait as a piece of art in your home. Whether it’s a framed canvas, an album, or a collection of prints, displaying these memories ensures they’re cherished every day.
